Chant workshop in Auburn

posted Sep 2, 2014, 7:34 PM by Rochester Ordinariate
Please attend to this note from our friend Joel Morehouse in Auburn.  P.S. - Joel, that business of chant with organ?  it's Anglican chant!  Those interested in Gregorian chant in English owe a huge debt to the Anglo-Catholics who published books about it before it was popular, such as the St. Dunstan Kyrial by Winfred Douglas, as well as the St. Dunstan plainsong psalter.

Hi all,

You are invited for the 2nd annual Gregorian Chant Gathering at Saint Mary's Church on Saturday, September 20. Whether you are a beginner, a chant pro, a seasoned schola director, or an interested bystander, there is something for you at our Chant Gathering. Come learn about Gregorian Chant and hone your skills!

Most of us think of Gregorian Chant being sung in Latin or sometimes Greek, but is it be possible to sing authentic Gregorian Chant in English? What would it sound like? How would it work? Would it have the same prayerful character? Come to our workshop this year to find out more.

This year's workshop will feature Fr. Columba Kelly, OSB, a faithful monk of Saint Meinrad's Archabbey since 1952. Fr. Columba studied Gregorian Chant and Sacred Music in Rome, receiving his doctorate in 1963. Since that time, Fr. Columba has worked tirelessly to create over 1,800 melismatic chant propers and ordinaries for the English liturgy after the principles of historic Gregorian Music.  Fr. Columba is a huge figure for Gregorian Chant in this century and you will certainly not want to miss his visit. Fr. Columba will speak in the morning for everyone and then offer a workshop in the afternoon for intermediate and advanced chant folks.

Dr. Jim Jordan from Paraclete Press will be unable to join us this year, unfortunately, however he is planning to send a box of chant materials from Solesmes which will be available for purchase.

Aaron James, MM, will offer a workshop on Chant Accompaniment at the organ. While chant works exceptionally well unaccompanied, sometimes organ accompaniment provides the needed impetus to encourage congregational singing and confidence. Learn how to make it happen!

Yours truly (Joel Morehouse, Director of Music at Saint Mary's) will offer a workshop on adventurous chanting for beginners. If you're completely green and need some help getting started, this is the workshop for you!
